THE POPULAR NIGERIAN "STEW COOKING OIL" AND ARTERIOSCLEROSIS.

I call them "stew cooking oil" because I honestly don't know what they are made from really, but generally they are what we refer to as "groundnut oil". If they are 100% seed oil, they would definitely never be caught "sleeping" like we say, or congealed like the rest of the world says (if you doubt this, do a survey of pure seed oil sold in customized bottles). Arterioclerosis is a condition resulting from formation of plaque in arteries - blood vessels supplying oxygenated blood to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body (you don't know what plaque is?..Then imagine the same sleeping oil phenomenom happening on the inside walls of your arteries). In other words plaque is a build up of fatty sediments in arteries, and these sediments or deposits remain solid even at body temperature which is 37 degrees centigrade, which is slightly higher than room temperature (in this case market shops temperature) which usually ranges from 20 to 25 degrees centigrade.. So lets get a bigger picture.. imagine you have had to eat stews made with "sleepin oil" all your life, (then remember all the times we've asked the meatseller to add faty meat portions to the rations we purchased -  sorry for the digression, I know we aren't talking about meat today, but it adds to the bigger picture). In summary, plaque results from deposits of saturated fat which are solid at room temperature, along inner linings of arteries and plaque consequently reduces the size of the lumen of the arteries (lumen is the opening in the centre of blood vessels through which blood flows). Need I say more? You can deduce on your own that this will generally increases the risk of High blood pressure over time as the blood would requre more pressure to pass through reduced lumen. Renal/kidney disease is also probable if plaque builds up in the renal artery , and Angina pectoris (which I will best describe to you great pain in the chest) may also result when there is plaque build up in arteries supplying muscles . So next time you go "groundnut oil" shopping, go for "non sleeping" ones.

  1. Now assuming it has built up already in one's system, how can it be reduced or completely taken away?

    1. That's the bad thing about the build up. It is not easily cleared. But fruits , some specially formulated formulars and certain drugs help.

  5. Lovely and educative writing. Atherosclerosis has become quite rampant in our society today and is the number 1 risk factor for ischemic heart disease and hypertension. We really need to educate our people on making the right dietary choices. Prevention is definitely better than cure. Thanks for being part of the solution.

Does someone run the same risk with red oil?
Cos I know our people have used that for ages.

    1. On the contrary certain researches have shown that palm oil helps to bind away bad fat that sediment if you use more of the layer that floats.
